Learn to play pokerOne of the great aspects of the game of poker, is that around the poker table, everyone is the same. It doesn’t matter if you’re highly educated, famous or extremely wealthy- everyone stands an equal chance of winning. Many people seem to think that one has to be very experienced to win at poker games. However, it has been proven over and over again, that newcomers can become poker champions as well, with many having already done so- almost overnight.
It is really not difficult to learn how to play poker. To play the game WELL, however, is a different story all together. But Rome was not built in a day. Allow yourself some time to grasp the basics first and prepare yourself for the fact that you will have limited success at inception. Regard that as a worthy price to pay, in order to learn a brilliant game that will leave a lasting impression on your life. And yes, you will gradually learn skills that will change the way you interpret people and respond to them.
As you go along, not only will you get hooked on the game, but your skills will improve, and you will be able to create poker strategies to make the most of your hand and outsmart your opponents. But remember- practise makes perfect. The more you play poker – the better you’ll get at it! So let’s start at the beginning:
- The poker rankings:
Almost all types of poker games and its variants have one common denominator- the poker rankings that determine which player has the best poker hand. This is the very first element of poker that you have to learn. For easy reference, we have laid them out for you on this site, with some visuals. We recommend that you print a copy out for yourself and keep it next to you when you start to play, until you are completely au fait with it. Click here to view the rank of hands. - The poker terms & lingo:
When you start to play poker, whether it is in a poker room at a land casino, or online, you could very easily feel like a foreigner in a country whose language you don’t understand. The poker environment has a very distinct language of its own. We suggest you familiarize yourself with this first, before you face your opponents across a table. However, don’t be too hard on yourself if you cannot absorb all of that immediately. The best way to learn, is to jump in and swim. As you start playing, you will catch up on the terms quite quickly. It is once again recommended that you keep a print out handy, so that you can quickly refer back to it, when you need to. Click here to view our tutorial on the poker terms.
- Poker Etiquette
To be fully accepted as a member of the poker fraternity, that will be allowed to play at the best poker tables, you will have to strictly adhere to the poker etiquette. Those who don’t, are frowned upon, and will quickly find themselves kicked out of poker games. This might vary slightly from poker room to poker room, and depending on whether you play online or at a land casino - Poker Rules
Poker rules vary, depending on the variant of poker you play. We recommend that you select the type of poker game that appeals to you most, and then simply start to play with some friends. When you play, you will learn the rules of the game as you go along. If your friends do not share your passion for wanting to learn, you can learn like most poker champions have- by playing poker online. Once you’ve mastered one particular type of poker game, you can move on to another one. For your convenience, we have listed the most popular poker games here, with an elaborate explanation of the rules of each:
- No Limit Texas Hold’em - Limit Texas Hold’em - Omaha - 5-Card Stud Poker - Seven Card Stud Poker - 5-Card Draw Poker - HORSE - Razz
- Poker Strategy
Poker strategy will vary, depending on the type of game you play, what cards you are dealt, and what your opponent does. You will learn to refine your strategy, as you start playing. An integral part of this is to learn how to read your opponent, so that you can take action accordingly. Read all about that, in our Poker Tells section. Everyone knows that poker will not be poker without its quota of bluffing. We would advise you however, to leave bluffing for the next level, until you are at least an intermediate- or advanced player. In the meantime, just take careful note of the poker tells and check your own body language, to prevent your opponents from knowing the strength of your hand- based on how you react to the cards you are dealt. Apart from that, rather focus on the strength of your hand and how you can make the most of it. As your poker skills develop, you can read our section for intermediate players, with the best poker tips & strategies to follow.
The most important poker strategy you have to follow right now, is: “Know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em.” Many newbies make the mistake of playing too many hands, just to remain in the game. Until you are experienced and confident enough, you are bound to get burnt if you overplay a weak hand. If you really have a slim chance of building up a good hand with the cards you have been dealt, do the wise thing and rather fold’em.
Last but not least, is your “bank roll.” This is the term that is used for the amount of money or poker chips you have available to play with. Managing your bank roll properly, is crucial to your success in a game of poker. Click here to read our Bankroll Advice for some tips on how to do this efficiently. So now you know the basics and you are ready to start playing. Click here to download free poker software so you can play poker online at Piggs Peak Poker. The advantage of doing that- is that you can play in practise mode for as long as you like, until you feel ready to play for real money. With our online tutorial and live help facility to guide you through the process, you will be playing like a pro though, in no time!
